SUMMER FLOUNDER

PARALICHTHYS DENATATUS

The Summer Flounder is a flatfish known for its remarkable ability to change color and blend into its surroundings on the ocean floor. Its body is flattened with both eyes located on the left side, a trait common among left-eyed flounders.

These ambush predators feed on small fish, squid, and crustaceans, lying buried in the sand before striking quickly when prey swims by. They are active swimmers compared to other flatfish and are commonly found along sandy coastal areas, bays, and estuaries.

Summer Flounder are also an important species for both commercial and recreational fishing along the Atlantic coast of North America. Proper management has helped maintain healthy populations in recent years.
